How To Lose Belly Fat & Get Abs Fast

Before we get into much detail about how to lose belly fat and get abs fast, I first would like you to forget about all the false and hyped-up fitness and nutrition info that you hear on infomercials, in magazine and internet advertising, and from your brother’s, wife’s, cousin.

This information may shock you, but it is true:
1. Body Fat can Kill You.
2. Anybody can burn and minimize their body fat. (There’s no excuse.)
3. Going on a reduced diet and starving yourself can cause you to gain more FAT!

4. The foods that Mom always said were good for you actually weren’t.
(Don’t worry, Mom’s not a liar, she just didn’t realize the difference.)
5. Protein will help you burn fat, but not all protein is created equally.
6. If you want to lose belly fat and get abs DO NOT do cardio!

1. Body Fat Can Kill You.
Decades ago, it was no big deal to carry a little extra luggage around our waists as we aged. It was simply viewed as a sign of getting older and slowing down. However, because of medical information and tests, we now realize that this added fat can be deadly. There is a direct correlation between abdominal fat and heart disease, hypertension (high blood pressure), Type 2 Diabetes, various kinds of cancer and organ problems.

Your body stores two basic types of fat, subcutaneous and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is the fat that you can grab a hold of. It is under your skin. On the other hand, visceral fat is the fat that you can’t see. It is hidden inside your abdominal cavity and surrounds your organs and intestines. Visceral fat is the killer and the one that we need to worry about most. So even though losing belly fat will make us look more attractive, it may also save our life.

2. Anybody can lose body fat.
This is good news. Even for people with an overactive gland or bad genetics, etc. We can all easily burn subcutaneous and visceral fat by dieting and exercising. Simply by changing what we eat, we can alter our metabolism to burn more belly fat.

In addition to dieting, wee can exponentially increase our fat burning ability by doing weight training or muscle building. Weight training does two things: it speeds up our metabolism and it produces more muscle tissue. This new muscle tissue acts like a furnace and continues to burn more and more calories even while we are resting. As a result of muscle building, we are now burning more
calories constantly, 24 hours a day!

3. Reduced Diets are usually a bad idea for burning fat.
I said usually because there is a time and place for a reduced diet. For example, if you are extremely obese, with huge amounts of stored fat, then it may be wise to greatly reduce your diet to a normal caloric level of around 2000 calories a day. Otherwise, for the rest of us, do not try to lose belly fat and get abs by greatly reducing your diet or starving yourself. This is totally counter-productive. Your paleolithic metabolism reacts to calorie reduction by storing even more fat because your body thinks it is in danger of starving.

A much wiser and effective solution is to not make yourself go hungry. You should actually eat small meals more often throughout the day to keep your metabolism going strong. Instead of eating just one or two large meals a day, it is much better to eat small meals and healthy snacks every 3 waking hours.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of counting calories. It takes a lot of time and effort, plus it’s not as effective to limit your calories to a specific number and make your body feel hungry.
A better solution is to do a ‘Food Exchange’. I am talking about substituting unhealthy foods with healthier alternatives. In this way, you are still satisfying your cravings for food and you are not going hungry. However, you are no longer filling your body with empty calories that add to your belly fat.

4. The foods that Mom always said were good for you actually weren’t.
As they say “old habits die hard” and with many of us, we’ve grown up eating foods that we thought were healthy, but maybe they weren’t the healthiest options available.

I’ve created a simple list of typical foods with healthier alternatives. By substituting the following foods, you will be on the fast track to lose belly fat and get abs.

Replace the foods on the left with the foods on the right.

ketchup – mustard
salad dressing – oil and vinegar
cereal with sugar – cereal with no sugar or less sugar
corn and rice cereal – whole wheat cereal or oatmeal
concentrated fruit juice – natural fruit juice (not from concentrate) or Crystal Light
soda – club soda
sugary drinks – unsweetened tea (it’s easy to make yourself with tea bags and water)
sweet milk chocolate – dark chocolate with lower sugar
ice cream – sorbet, yogurt, or sugar free ice cream
white bread – whole wheat, whole grain, rye breads
white rice – brown rice
white pasta, enriched grain pasta – whole grain pasta
donuts – whole grain bagels
canned fruits and vegetables – fresh fruits and vegetables
processed meats and cheeses – fresh meats and cheeses
chips, pretzels, unhealthy snacks – almonds, walnuts, protein shake, hard boiled or deviled eggs

If you really want to jump start losing body fat even faster, you should minimize your carbohydrate intake when you first begin the diet and eat more protein and fiber. Ideally, eat 50 grams or less of good carbs a day. (Good carbs come from vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, nuts, and whole grains.)

5. Protein will help you burn fat, but not all protein is created equally.
In regards to building lean muscle, there are certain proteins that are much better than others. The best kind of protein for building lean muscle in humans is protein that has a similar biological content to that of human muscle tissue. Like they say “You are what you eat.” By eating foods with a similar biological structure to that of human muscle tissue, we will gain more lean muscle tissue faster.

For example, you always hear of soy being a great source of protein. Well, I’ll admit, it is a healthy food loaded with protein, no fat, minimal or no carbs, and low calories. However, soy is not the best source of protein for building lean muscle tissue. This is because it isn’t a good biological match to human flesh.

The best proteins for building muscle are the ones highest in biological content matching human flesh which have the essential amino acids that our muscles need such as: eggs, raw milk, organ meats, unprocessed beef, pork, chicken and other fowl, beans and legumes.

If you are a vegetarian, or would like a more convenient source of protein, you can drink protein shakes. Natural foods are your best source of protein, however, sometimes protein shakes are much more convenient. Whey and egg proteins are some of the best. Just be sure to find one that has little or no carbs, and no added sugar or added preservatives. For vegans or people with gluten problems, you’ll want to read the ingredients carefully to make sure a particular protein powder is right for you.

6. If you want to lose belly fat and get abs DO NOT do cardio!
When most people want to loose weight, the first thing they often do is get a gym membership and hit the treadmill or bike. While this is good for burning calories and improving our cardiovascular system, it is not the best way to lose belly fat and get abs. If you want to lose fat and build or maintain your lean muscle, you should avoid extended cardio workouts. It is better to do short and intense interval training (under 20 minutes) to prevent muscle loss.

Cardio really doesn’t burn fat. In most cases, it burns your muscle tissue as a source of energy before it will burn your stored fat. That is why you won’t see many muscle-bound marathon runners, but it is common to see a marathon runner with skinny arms and legs with a small pot belly. That pot belly is his stored fat that stays with him and is useful when he ‘hits the wall’ in a marathon. It’s the last thing that gets burned during cardio exercise.

As we learned above in step 2, weight training and muscle building are the fastest natural ways to boost your metabolism and burn belly fat. Once you lose enough body fat, you will begin to see your abs and muscle definition throughout your body.

By making a small commitment to follow the above tips and substitute a few foods in your diet, you will see great results in your goal to lose belly fat and get abs fast.
